New Paddler Information
What is dragon boating?

Dragon boating is a sport that has its roots in ancient China with a history dating back over 2000 years. Today the sport is popular around the world requiring teamwork, mental and physical strength.
Dragon boats are large canoe-like boats with elaborately carved dragons' heads and tails. The crew sit in pairs, paddling in time whilst steered by the helm, and as numbers allow, we have a drummer beating time, It is a fun way to socialise and meet your fitness goals. Paddling engages your whole body whilst giving you a good cardio workout.

Physical ability

Dragon boating requires some strength and endurance and involves repetitive movements. We always make adjustments for paddlers as required. It is important to listen to your body and know when to rest. Don't worry we definitely include rest stops and no previous experience is needed.

We meet every Saturday at 10am. Please let us know that you are coming so we can welcome you and include you in numbers for the boat. All new paddlers will have a safety briefing that includes how to paddle, boat commands, buddy system and what to do in the event of a capsize ( extremely rare!). Paddles and buoyance aids are provided.
We begin the session with a warm up before being paired up and embarking. When getting on the boat, the helm will direct you one at a time.
You must listen to the helms instructions at all times.

When we finish the session, some of us help put the boats away, whilst others help preparing teas and coffees. Please join us for refreshments and a chat!

What to wear?

Please dress according to the weather. Layers are recommended rather than thick bulky clothing and consider a waterproof or windproof jacket. Trainers are suitable footwear. Jeans and boots are NOT recommended. We are often blessed with sunshine too, so please remember a hat / sunscreen / water bottle. Please don't bring anything on the boat you want to keep dry. There is a locker for personal belongings.

Roles on the boat

The Helm

The helm is in charge of the boat and responsible for safe loading and unloading of the boat as well as paddling throughout the session. The helm gives commands to control the boat and ensures the safety of all crew and other water users.

Paddlers

It is important to be alert to and follow instructions given by the helm by listening and reacting quickly. Paddlers maintain stability in the boat by remaining seated and not moving around the boat unless directed by the helm.

The Drummer

The drummer follows the timing set by the front left paddler ( The Stroke) which helps set the rhythm, pace and timing of the boat.
